14 years (and 12 days) ago I became a daddy.

Eight years (and 3.5 hours ago) I became a daddy for the last time.

This is the story of a ginger spitfire.
It was a quiet evening, following a whirlwind week of preparations for my sister in law's wedding, which my wife and I participated in.

Ginger (not his actual name) was due on May 10th.

We'd settled in for the night and were catching up on Dr. Who.
Wifey had come back from the bathroom, when everything went off the rails.

She sat on the side of the bed, and that's when Ginger decided he'd had enough time in the oven.

Within a few minutes, she was on her way to the hospital in an ambulance, while I coordinated a sitter.
I got ahold of my in laws and they agreed to come over to watch our older two boys while they slept.

As soon as they arrived, I sped off to the hospital to be with Wifey.

Wifey was stabilized but Ginger had made a mess of things and needed to come out ASAP.
This all started around 2 AM. She went into the OR around 5. Ginger came out around 5:30.

I took this just after he came out. As you can see, he's chilling out while the world is going mad around him.

They had to speed him over to another hospital with a NICU immediately.
It was the most agonizing stretch of time I've ever known. Will Ginger and Wifey make it? Is everything okay? What are the long term consequences?

Thankfully, and I attribute this to the dozens of people praying round the clock for us all, everything wound up okay.
Wifey spent a few days recovering in the hospital, during which I went back and forth between her bedside and Ginger's NICU pod.

I was able to set up (pre-FaceTime) a Skype meeting between Wifey, on her laptop, & Ginger, in his little pod a few miles away, on my super old phone.
Ginger spent two months in the NICU before being unleashed upon the world, and now spends his time chattering away until all hours of the day and night about Minecraft, Zelda, Tom Nook, and unbelievably enough, exercising and eating healthy! Who knew?
