People talk about how we need a certain kind of Superman, “given these times” and they make it seem like what we need right now is a Superman that’s gentle and quiet. But if Superman is what we need him to be at any given time why should he be quiet?
When Superman was created he provided more catharsis than emotional support. He was angry at a world that mistreated people and he lashed out at those forces until the world forced the writers to put him in a box. Superman wasn’t created to be a big brother or step-father.
He was a warrior; he was OUR warrior. He fought for us because we couldn’t. Why should that be different now? Maybe the problem is we’ve been trying to keep Superman in the box when we SHOULD be letting him loose. Maybe we need Superman to fight for us, to rage for us, to tear it
all down in our names so we can feel that catharsis that PREVENTS us from having to do that ourselves. Not to inspire us to anger or violence, but to provide a healthy outlet for those natural human emotions so we don’t take them out into the world with us. It’s amazing that,
back in the day, super heroes were being shoved in a box because they operated outside the system and adults wanted to train kids that the system was their friend. Now we know that the system is broken but we want to bench our star player because we’d rather him hand out cups of
cocoa then bring the pain in our name. Maybe I’m just one hundred percent that asshole and I’ll fucking eat that pie if need be. But I want my Superman to be that guy that gets fucking pissed at the things that are wrong and beats the crap out of it because he IS that symbol.
Maybe that’s why this is resonating with people because that IS the Superman we need right now. Someone who does have hope, someone who is good for no reason other than to be good, someone who is one hundred percent of us - and THATS why he’s so fucking pissed off.
