Cristiano Ronaldo, the most influential football player of all time
A thread:
Ronaldo stunned United in a pre season game Roy Keane commented "Sheasy ended up seeing the doctor at half time because he was actually having dizzy spells”. The deal was then made, worth £12m. Keane went further to say "Sheasy actually sealed the deal by playing like a clown".
Ronaldo took the number 7 shirt previously worn by David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson and George Best. Over the next couple of seasons he developed into the English game, with Paul Scholes saying the United players “kicked his (Ronaldo’s) inexperience out of him”.
His career started properly in 2006/07 when he became undoubtedly the best player in the Premiership. He became the only ever PL history to achieve all of the following in one season: PFA POTY, PFA YPOTY, Fans POTY, FWA POTY, PL POTY, PFA TOTY. He won his first league title
The following season Ronaldo became the best in the world. He scored 31 goals in the league with 0.9 gpg. Compare this to prime Thierry Henry and prime Aguero who only managed 0.8, and he did it from RM. He was also the Champions League top goal scorer, winning the UCL and PL
Ronaldo’s Manchester United career peaked when he won the 2008 Ballon D’Or, halfway through a season that would see United win their third league title in a row, a feat only one English team had managed before, the Treble winners.
During his time at Manchester United, Ronaldo revolutionised what it meant to be a winger in England. Nothing had been seen like him in England before.
He also formed one of the best partnerships of the 21st century in football with Wayne Rooney, and between 06/07 and 08/09 the pair scored 104 goals between them in the league.
In the summer of 2009 Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid for a world record fee of £80m, doubling the £40m fee for Zidane which was the previous record. Ronaldo scored 311 goals in 292 La Liga games, a gpg of 1.07. This is the highest in La Liga history, higher than Lionel Messi’s 0.92
During his time at Real Madrid, Ronaldo won 3 UCL titles in a row and is the greatest goal scorer in UCL history, with 134 goals to Lionel Messi’s 118. Ronaldo also has the most goals in the UCL quarters, semis, and finals, evidence that he is the most big game player in history.
Ronaldo left Madrid in 2018, having won 4 Ballon D’Ors at the club. At Juventus he has been between the ages of 33 and 36. Despite this age Ronaldo has a gpg of 0.84, better than any of the top 30 Serie A goal scorers of all time
Ronaldo is the top international goal scorer of all time in Europe with 102 goals, compared to second place Puskas’ 84. This is also greater than Lionel Messi’s 71. Ronaldo is also now the greatest goalscorer of all time, with his tally now at 781 goals.
The misconception of Ronaldo merely being a goal scorer is also disproven by his 265 assists, only behind Suarez and Messi.
