THREAD: Greenwood - A little Gravity + Chance Creation.
A 19 year old player developing this kind of gravity in the PL is not spoken about enough. Defenders seem to abandon their zone/space to cut off his shooting angles/close him down. #MUFC https://twitter.com/yehfairs/status/1360012049108131843
(1) Many times this season, we have seen multiple defenders crowd around or attempt to shut down Mason when he cuts in or receives the ball on the edge of the box. This seems to be a result of his incredible goal-scoring record from low value shooting positions last summer
Sometimes when these defenders leave their assigned zone to close down or block off Greenwood’s shooting angles, it results in space created in the middle of the box or a forward left open. His two-footedness allows him to open up various angles to both shoot and pass the ball.
I believe that Mason’s shown an improvement in his decision-making and chance creation recently. In the near future, I think we will see him using his gravity to find teammates through cut backs, which are one of the most effective ways of creating goal scoring opportunities.
(2) It’s no secret that we’ve seen improvement in Greenwood’s all-round play in recent weeks. His anticipation and vision have really impressed me. He’s shown us that he’s starting to make smarter adjustments/better decisions while in possession in deep + wide areas. In some —
— In some instances, after receiving the ball in the halfspace, he’s chosen to deliver a cross or even go wide and deliver a low cross. Previously he would tend to cut in onto to his left or simply try to force a shot through a crowd of defenders (quite frustrating at times...)
Some examples of him playing a part in United’s chance creation in recent performances :
- pass+cross to Rashford (Liverpool/Southampton)
- back post cross to Bruno (Wolves)
- Cross from half space towards Cavani (Everton)
Cutbacks, low drilled crosses and whipped crosses from the half-space are examples of proven methods of effective chance creation over recent years (Man City, LFC).
In conclusion, it’s great to see Greenwood affecting more facets of the game with his play and showing improved decision making as he picks up more and more match experience.
Lol so this started off as me just quoting a tweet about Mason Greenwood but it somehow ended up becoming my first thread (I know it’s not well-written+I could’ve used better pics). If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading and I would love to hear your feedback 💯 #mufc
