Friendship Lessons for my Son

~ Open Letter ~
1. A great friend looks out for your best interests

He knows what will make you happy, and

Support you in finding it.
2. Friendship is a two-way street

If efforts are only one-sided, it will never sustain.

Sometimes, one of you may need extra support from other.

But that should not be the basis of friendship.
3. Beware the attention seekers

These are people who are bored with their own lives.

They will come up with dragging you down with them.

Identify when someone is using you for his own amusement and steer clear.
4. Share, but beware

Pursue your love of sharing with friends,

But be mindful of being taken advantage of.
5. Be a great listener

When you don’t know what to say to a friend going through a tough time,

Just be there with him.

You don’t have to solve every single problem, Just listen
6. Remember your close friends’ birthdays

Send them a card.

Do something more than post on social media.

Make the day special for them.
7. Realize some friendships are not built to last a lifetime

It doesn’t make them any less meaningful or enjoyable.

People change throughout their life, and

It’s ok to grow more independent and explore separate paths.
8. A great friend does not become jealous,

When wonderful things happen to you.
9. When you find your first love, don’t ditch your friends.

Make time for both.

You’ll be needing them down the road once you come up for air.
10. When you haven’t heard from a close friend for a while,

Make the effort to check in with them.

Everyone’s busy, try not to hold a grudge.

99% of the time, it’s nothing personal.
