Got my battered old 1998 enhanced CD version of Powerslave ready for @Tim_Burgess ‘s @LlSTENlNG_PARTY tonight. As opening one two punches go, Aces High into 2 Minutes to Midnight is pretty unstoppable.

The title track and the extraordinary closer tell you everything you need to know about this band’s magical musicianship and ability to write incredibly complex yet catchy songs.

I think you can also tell that the endless album-tour-album cycle the band were on at the time means some things had to be done quite hastily (Losfer Words really is a bit of a “big ‘orra”). There are signs here that they needed a creative kick.

Bruce Dickinson tried (unsuccessfully) to introduce that for the next album, but we did ultimately end up with the synth heavy experiments of the next two (superb) records, which coming after Powerslave felt necessary.

Powerslave then is the sound of an amazing band at a creative and performance peak, albeit one that was trapped on a treadmill that it needed to somehow try and mitigate as they endlessly mined their minds and physical capabilities.
