There is a reason the big brands in Buy Now Pay Later are not in more countries than they are today, because scaling with #BNPL in #payments is hard.

A thread 👇
🕵️‍♀️ Identification: Identifying a consumer differs in each country and you need to figure out the best way to do this by finding the right partners, but also to make it easy enough to not kill conversion.
👮‍♀️Fraud: How will you stop the fraudsters and work with this proactively in each new country you will go into? Remember to not kill conversion at the same time.
🚨Credit risk: How will you determine the risk of non-payment in each country. Which credit bureaus are there, how much information do you get and on what level of detail is it? You should most likely prepare to lose a lot of money the first year(s).
🏪Merchant risk: As you will be most likely doing factoring, as in paying the merchant before you get paid, how do you assess the merchant risk so that they don’t go bankrupt or are selling bad goods?
📜License: You need a license is each country you want to do credit business in. This is usually mostly paperwork and time consuming. In the EU 🇪🇺 you can passport certain licenses across countries, which makes it easier.
🧑‍⚖️Legal and compliance: Every country has their own rules and regulations on how credit products must look like, what limitations they might have and so on. This affects the product you can market and your profitability.
🛒Checkout: As you need different information to assess credit risk and identification, the checkouts in each country need to look different and makes the integration more complicated.
🎭Culture: Different countries have different cultures which affect the way people behave, which in turn affects how your product needs to look like and work.
📱UX: There are different expectations on how a smooth experience looks like.
👨‍💼Customer service: Enable a local customer service department that can handle cases with the same quality you expect from your current markets.
💔Debt Collection: What happens when you can’t collect the debt with within the legally mandates time frames? Who will you contract to do this? What possibilities are there to collect debt in that country? How much are you expected to get back?
👩‍💼Sales: You will need to setup a local sales department in order to approach local merchants in their language. You could of course centralize, but it will be much harder to get traction.
