We now have groups in the SBC that want to take us backward under the guise that we're moving in the wrong direction. They are working on their ground game to get 1000s of messengers to the Convention for a second faux Conservative Resurgence.
Some may actually believe what they are selling, but that doesn't stop it from being a red herring. Most of their arguments hinge on a multi-year propaganda campaign to smear our entity leaders. And most of their campaign is based on lies, half-truths, and fomented distrust.
Meanwhile, they continue to bury the problem of clergy abuse, our failure to stop abusers from migrating from church to church, our culture of protecting institutions at the expense of survivors, and our unwillingness to hold accountable those who ignore or enable abuse.
Add to that a glib dismissal of the growing racial/ethnic divide in our nation and denomination as a "distraction" from the gospel rather than pursuing the unity and reconciliation that the gospel should produce. BIPOC SBC leaders are sidelined and their growing concerns ignored.
The so-called rank and file are "tired" of being confronted with these issues and would rather dismiss others as conforming to culture without considering their own brand of Christian faithfulness too is culturally bound and resists acknowledging deeply rooted systemic problems.
If they succeed in seizing control, they will believe they have saved the SBC. What they will actually have done is succeeded in telling abuse survivors, telling people of color, telling the world, that our brand of gospel ministry has nothing to do with their problems.
They will have sealed our fate as a dying and irrelevant denomination, having an appearance of godliness but denying its power. Of course, those who remain will endure a slow death with the false pride that at least they've been "faithful."
