Seeing the chat around Vale brooches from last week I thought I'd do something different for #FindFriday This map shows all the #IronAge Vale Brooches I know of so far in GB. The points are slightly misplaced to get them to fit but there some interesting things to see... 1/5
1st if you group them by broad shape there isn't much of a pattern in their distribution. I tried this by dividing them into hollow domed and solid domed examples and the same thing occurs - so much for my typology - oh well ☹️! 2/5
2nd barring the Yorkshire examples this is really quite a tight cluster of finds around South Oxfordshire and Berkshire. I do wonder wether this has been due to all the good work @ArchaeoAnni has done in studying these though? 3/5
3rd and finally there's tempting hints at a riverine connection in the placement of each of the brooches with them all being near major or secondary rivers. I tried underlaying the data with soils, character and authortiy districts but there weren't any as strong signals 4/5
This might be something but its also worth bearing in mind that most places in Britain are near a river so it would probably need some stats throwing at this to confirm. Regardless its yet another reason I'll need to read @justrena article on Irish connections with these now! 5/5
