this is gonna be a long thread I'm sorry
idk who needs to hear this but some of u seem to be confused about the purpose of season 4 with cas & ruby.
castiel was doing exactly what ruby was doing, and dean did exactly what sam did, which ended up in kick starting the apocalypse

ruby manipulated sam, kept insinuating the idea in him that he was better & stronger than his brother in order to stop lilith, was part of the reason the bros grew distant and less trusting of each other, had him do things he wouldn't under normal circumstances
and, so did cas
and, so did cas
the angels were never the good guys they were only the good cops while demons were playing bad cops.
angels didn't raise dean from perdition to save him, they only did it after he broke the first seal, and literally used his hell-torture trauma to keep him in line

making sure sam ended up killing lilith but only after she broke all the other seals in between.
cas himself let sam out of the panic room AFTER he went through all the hallucinations especially the one with dean. it was like an intense brain washing session that changed sam.

ruby used sam's dark side to manipulate him, cas used dean's self righteousness. ruby kept sam wondering & thinking he was doing the right thing, cas kept dean curious & thinking he was superior. they both made sure the brothers were against each other.
that's manipulation folks
that's manipulation folks
the apocalypse was a team effort and by team I mean team heaven + hell.
dean and sam are equals in breaking the seals. their only fault was not sticking together and standing up for each other, not one of them being inherently wrong since he was an infant (the implications!!!)

and you seem to be forgetting her role in all of this... anna milton
she was the angel who helped, she wasn't taking any sides and was genuinely useful, the intentional love interest for dean (some of u sure seem to be confusing cas with her lol) and her purpose was to show-

-how untrustworthy the angels are!
but since spn (yes kripke I'm looking at u too) can't write women characters, they rushed her storyline and later turned her into an enemy. they also left no redemption for ruby which adds to blaming sam for the apocalypse more than team heaven

in contrast, cas has a brilliant arc, with his changing sides at the last minute, sacrificing himself for a tiny chance of the brothers fixing their sh!t before it's too late. it doesn't work, sets heaven against this rebellious questioning little angel and turns him into a human
I think cas' redemption highlights sam+ team dark side a lot more, putting the blame on him. but that's a poor judgement because cas isn't representing heaven and he still is the reason dean drove sam away. dean's part in breaking the last seal was driving sam away.
they are all equals in breaking the seals, s & d less guilty of starting the apocalypse than hell & heaven, neither of them is to blame more than the other one
yes cas helped them, but there's a whole season where ruby kept helping them too.
how is sam guilty for trusting her?

it seems like some of you favour sides, in this case the bible side, just because they're conventionally the good people. not entirely ur faults tho, the show unreasonably indulges this pov. which is wrong on so many levels, and I feel like I should explain it too unfortunately.
first of all, blaming the guy who has something different and dArK inside him he can't change that the bible abhors is pretty homophobic-norm thinking. try watching s4 through queer allegories for sam and let me know if u haven't grown fangs yet.
second of all, sam wasn't taking hell's side. he went through different phases and decisions with his demon blood deal, even came to completely quitting once, & made many points about how useful he could actually be. he saved Jimmy Novak's family when he went back to drinking!
the other thing that seems to be forgotten here is what addiction really is. sam was at his lowest, at some points he couldn't think straight bc of the pressure of the addiction, he strayed away from his family bc of shame and sometimes bc they weren't helping at all
no one actually helped him with his addiction. he was told to stop it always in harsh and demeaning ways and no one was willing to listen to his reasoning. it was like his opinions didn't matter until he was clean. don't u see the problems with that???
that's why solely blaming sam for the apocalypse is rooted in worst kinds of victim blaming and terrible judgement.
I tried to explain it as best as I could because seeing so many bad takes on this subject is getting frustrating.
- finish

disclaimer: no hate was directed at dean, sam, cas, or even ruby. just in case, if there was any confusion.
season 4 has really good storytelling, with a hint of under the surface victim blaming, detestation of addiction, and hidden homophobia.
try watching it unbiased
