In December 2010, a friend of mine sent a music video of me and four of my best friends dancing in multicoloured pyjamas in front of a green screen to Steve Ramsay from @younggalaxy. I recorded the music on GarageBand using the keyboard as a piano since I didn’t have instruments
Steve, in what must’ve been pure desperation, emailed me saying he was looking for someone to play guitar and keys on a 6 week tour starting mid Feb in support of YG’s new album Shapeshifting which hadn’t been released yet.
I told him I would love to, but was under contract teaching full time and thanked him for thinking of me. Ramsay said no worries, but would love to meet up anyway for coffee.
A few weeks later I was playing my first show in front of a packed crowd at the SAT for a live taping of Q with Jian Gomeshi. My first ever live performance, besides playing in a high school band.
That first tour, Catherine McCandless was crazy pregnant. I still don’t know how she did it. Over the years, we drove all over North America, often in the dead of night, in a Ford E350. I was pretty convinced that I was eventually going to die in that van.
A year later, we recorded Ultramarine over a few weeks in Gothenburg with Dan Lissvik, probably the most artistically talented person I’ve ever met. Darryl Weeks, Dina Young and Trevor Larocque were always close by.
We were shortlisted for a @PolarisPrize for that one
Those 5+ years were the best of my life. I got married, wrote songs that some people actually liked, and got to travel all over the world playing music that I loved. Andrea Silver, Stephen Kamp, Catherine and Steve were and still are like family.
Thanks guys. I hope we can do it again sometime
