going off their og careers, her father became a luxury cruise ship captain and her mother a usa intelligence agent. she started working on the cruises at a young age and continued several years into adulthood
they met when one of the cruise ships docked on havana a few months after the communists seized power there, when she was 19 and this was years b4 she joined intelligence
she lost her virginity with him in that original meeting, in a way she describes as "sweet" and "tender" again years before she joined american intelligence. she had to go back to new york soon but was in love, often talking to him on the phone
she soon moved to cuba with him and fell pregnant 7 months later
it was around she meant sturgis, the american double agent in cuba who would later get her to join intelligence
this is where the breakup/cia stuff happens: she lost the baby. whether it was an abortion on purpose, a miscarriage, the baby being taken to avoid political drama; theres a lot of conflicting narratives. we just know whatever happened here made her turn against castro
