Tonight, all I have to say is please, please, PLEASE communicate better with your patients and their families. Take their perspective. What would you want to know? What would worry you? How could things be left unanswered to someone without your medical knowledge?
From my own experience and those of my friends and family, I know that poor communication is the rule, not the exception. Thank you to those doing it well. Please know that it is terrifying and heartbreaking and so, so scary on this side of the patient-doctor relationship.
Proper, well thought out, emotionally intelligent communication is not an afterthought. It is not a bonus. It’s not an “if you have time.” Make the time. Learn the skills. It’s inhumane not to. Do no harm.
