When starting a critique group, ask:
1. How long have they been writing?
2. How much material have they produced in the last year?
3. How much material do they want to produce in the next year?
4. How often can they meet?
5. Can they receive constructive criticism absent emotion?
My recent critique group disbanded because one person started getting really defensive, and lashed out at us after feeling attacked. She's new to writing and I get it. Writing is hard. Hard to stomach an honest critique that, when you look back at, bears actual truth.
So find people at your level. Find out how much critique your emotions can handle. Otherwise, maybe you're not ready to join a critique group to grow your writing. Instead, find a support group, where you can inspire each other with positivity, praise and validation. Good luck!
