The 1992-93 Sonics were one great team. Being coached by George Karl, they finished with a 55-27 record. This would place them second in the Pacific, seven games behind the 62-20 Phoenix Suns. They would also get the 3 seed in the NBA Playoffs in the west.
This team was led in scoring by a 33 Year old Ricky Pierce at 18.2 PPG with Shawn Kemp close behind at 17.8. This team showed to be the deepest team in the league with six guys averaging double figures and being the best defensive team in the entire NBA.
5 Players Racked up over 100 steals including Gary Payton with 177 and Nate McMillan with 177. The team knew that they had their future with a young Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp being the clear leaders of the team.
The 1993 Playoffs had Seattle Matching up against the Utah Jazz in a 5 game series. The Sonics got the win in the series and moved on to the conference semifinal after defeating the Jazz 3-2.
The Sonics faced off against the 2 seeded Houston Rockets and came out of game 7 with a win. The defense of this team showed to be superior than the likes of Hakeem Olajuwon and Otis Thorpe.
They then fell to the 1 Seed Phoenix Suns in the conference finals, barely missing the NBA finals. Charles Barkley showed to be a huge problem on the glass and averaged a double double the entire series.
All in all, this was a great team and also very interesting. Sucks to see that they could never get it done with Payton and Kemp.
