I know there have been questions about #COVID19AB rapid testing, so let me explain Alberta’s approach so far.

After receiving tests in the fall, @AHS_media tested them and started deploying them to outbreaks, shelters, hospitals & other places to test people w/ symptoms. (1/7)
Rapid testing was deployed across the province. @GovCanHealth has licensed the tests only for use in symptomatic people. The tests are not licensed as a screening tool, so we used them accordingly. (2/7)
It is important that we work in collaboration and alignment with the national reg. bodies on all health technologies and all jurisdictions were initially cautious to use these tests ‘off-label.’ (3/7)
In January, the Testing and Screening Expert Advisory Panel determined that, in certain settings, rapid tests may be effective in screening those w/ no known symptoms or contacts. The panel issued guidelines last month, and we’ve started using them accordingly. (4/7)
AHS and contracted operators have been directed to deploy rapid testing to screen asymptomatic staff at all long-term care and supportive living facilities across Alberta. This will rapidly increase the use of these tests. (5/7)
Health officials will also be reaching out to other settings, including schools and meat-processing plants, in the coming days to explore ways to use rapid testing in these facilities too. (6/7)
Rapid testing is an important addition to COVID prevention, but it is not a failsafe. We all must keep making safe choices to limit the spread, break chains of transmission and protect each other. (7/7)
