Just cause I talk about songwriting on here a lot with any specific stories, I’d like to share what happened today bc I think it’s helpful and also was very fun.
I wrote with some great writers today, we always get good stuff. I had an idea that was something like “the greatest lie the devil ever told” and it was about trying to convince some girl I loved her and she wouldn’t believe me. Basic stuff.
we had been at it a couple hours and had the song done to the point where we were deciding if it needed a bridge or not. Jerry Flowers, one of the writers, had this pretty cool guitar thing going while we were singing it down.
What Jerry was playing was honestly the coolest thing about the song, which I knew in my heart but didn’t want to say anything (i was kind of hungry and wanted to go eat lunch).
This guitar part was so effing rad that the lyrics seemed embarrassing in comparison. Like little green army men going up against a GI Joe. So Nick, the other writer, has been on mute for about 5 minutes.
I ask him if he’s good with everything and he goes “man... I don’t want mess up this whole thing we did but I can’t stop thinking about how the song should be about (and then he said something pretty great).”
The idea Nick had served the guitar riff and the song so much better. Then it got me excited. I forgot I was hungry. I felt the smile of the songwriting muse land upon me. We wrote the mess out of that song today ladies and gentleman.
And any one of us at any point could’ve said nah let’s just stick with what we had and not write a whole other song. But we didn’t. And this song is so good that I don’t even care if anything ever happens to it.
So anyway that’s my story. IDK if it was any good but it’s true and writing songs is hard and feels pointless so when my soul lights up on a random Thursday afternoon I guess I can tweet about it.
Thanks for listening. Follow me for more rambling stories about songwriting and being a country music artist and commentary on the real hard hitting issues (like is bread an appetizer or a side?).
