Prior to the creation of this fusion of Soul and funk Marvin Gaye had hit new heights of creativity and unbelievable lows in commercial success with two of his releases which included
Here My Dear and In Our Lifetime.

In the late 70s Marvin endured a life long addiction to cocaine which plagued him financially but ruled his energy to create and helped him cope with past traumas of abuse from his father.

Famously Marvin Gaye endured a divorce with Anna Gordy which led to the creation of Here My Dear to cover the financial demands of the divorce. Having trouble with the IRS as well , Marvin fled to Hawaii and then eventually London. Marvins pain fuiled his creativity tragically.

The general public wasn’t ready for his new found creativity and neither was Motown. His label wanted numbers no matter the creativity of the art and he wasn’t delivering like he did the past decades. The once Prince of Motown had strained relationship that was toxic.

Motown catching wind of the unfinished album known as In Our Lifetime , they rushed released his work against his wishes in 1981. Marvin disrespected by this decision he nullified his contract with Motown after his 20 year association which ended an era.

With his personal career and musical career shrouded in darkness Marvin moved from London to Belgium to rebuild his career and reputation. He accepted a deal with CBS records and began construction on his latest release Midnight Love.

The process of making the album took place between 1981-1982. Marvin was determined to come back with a bang as his last hit he had was back in 1977 with Got To Give It Up. Marvin rebranded his sound with a more modern sound using Jupiter 8 synths and more processed style.

Marvin adapted well in the 80s new sound using instrumentation used frequently in synth pop and reggae at the time. He ditched the multilayered approach of his past two projects for a clash of sounds from many genres which included Soul , R&B , funk and reggae to get you dancing

Marvin’s subject matter across the album explores lust and sexuality over upbeat jams which are laced with his flawless vocals. He slightly dabbles with spiritual matters but this is undeniably a midnight love album rightfully titled. I

Marvin had done it again and with his lead single sexual healing landing at
#3 Us pop and #1 R&B solidified that. Sexual healing is timeless seductive song which will forever be sampled by modern R&B and played at romantic occasions. Marvin’s angelic vocals is perfection.

Marvin Gaye even shows love to his legend counterpart Bob Marley the king of reggae with his song Third World girl , praising beauty of women across the world in Marvin like fashion.

Midnight Love went on to go double platinum and peaking at number one in R&B charts and number 7 in pop charts. The album accomplished wide world success. He acquired grammy awards for the first time for his single Sexual Healing.

Marvin was back on top with commercial and critical success at the beginning of the new decade. He went on his last tour in 1983 but his past trouble with drugs and trauma caught up to him during this time. He was so close to having it all again but he was damaged and needed help

Due to his history catching up to him Marvin was forced to end the tour and retreat from his addictions and move in with his Mother and Father to get away from the toxic tour life. During this time he still went on to make purchases of cocaine. His family was aware of this.

One day before his birthday Marvin’s Mother and Father entered a heated argument over a misplaced insurance policy letter. This argument breached Marvin’s bedroom , angry at his father he entered the argument on the side of his mother.

The argument became a fight and Marvin struck his father down like his father did to him decades ago as a child. His father left and returned to Marvin’s pistol and shot him in his heart. Marvin didn’t survive this and died tragically at his fathers hand in his bedroom.

At the start of his rebirth of his career the icons life was cut short in the 1984. Marvin could have went on to explore different eras of music and experiment with different years and music and possibly could have recovered from his vice. Endless possibilities lost.

Another music icon lost! Music had lost another legend which was named The Prince Of Soul. I’d like to think that Marvin would have created more and possibly experiment and collaborate with new genres. His new success would have provided for his music and pushed it further

His new chance lost. His new chapter never finished and most importantly a loss of life of an incredible musician

RIP to Marivin Gaye he will forever be remembered and sampled and played. Midnight Love was his last gift and will be the soundtrack to love and lust for decades to come. Classic in the every sense!
