On the 1st of February 2021, the Japanese govt updated the comfort women section on the History Issues Q&A page of the Foreign Ministry website. You can see the differences between the previous version and the new one here https://web.archive.org/web/20210210025000/http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/q_a/faq16.html
One bit that stands out is this: "Despite such sincere efforts by the Government of Japan, there are claims that can hardly be said to be based on historical facts, such as the allegations of “forceful taking away” of comfort women and “sex slaves” "
In all the previous versions of the section on comfort women, there were references to apologies, the Kono Statement, and to the work of the Asian Women's Fund.
Now there are sections on Comfort Women statues, the recent ruling by a Korean Court, and pushback against the idea of "forceful taking away" and the term "sex slave". This seems a pretty new departure.
