Not just weird: it’s violently ignorant & highlights the shallow understanding Asian folks have of their anti-Blackness. If we as AAPI ppl truly understood the function of anti-Blackness as the fulcrum upon which white supremacy depends on: we’d never make this vile comparison. https://twitter.com/boopyape/status/1359939938880397312
We would squarely place our critiques on dismantling white supremacy vs. begging Black people to show up for us. I’ve seen so many Asian accounts, influencers, etc. post these sentiments, not seeing how in their pain: is the violence that anti-Blackness is. That’s pain too.
If we’re saying that Asian folks can’t grieve the real pain of the violence in the community right now without relying on their anti-Blackness to process it, that’s troubling. We’re in trouble, fam. I don’t believe that’s true though. Many don’t believe that.
It always feels gross and embarrassing talking at length, yet again, about our anti-Blackness on here, but I know folks are reading this & haven’t made the commitment to not just “addressing” your antiBlackness: but ending it. Committing to a life of dismantling white supremacy.
AAPI folks have to be honest with themselves about if they’ve committed to that, or if they ever will. The ironic thing is that once you do, you can maybe start to heal from all the pain you’re holding. Instead of projecting it, causing harm, & wondering what you did wrong.
