I got this comment on one of my TikTok posts about being gifted with ADHD and it really bothered me and I realized why.

The comment was, “What a superficial and childish description.”

First, this was TikTok, if you want nuance perhaps dig a little deeper. 1/
Social media is a superficial medium in general.

But as a child with unidentified ADHD in gifted programs, who was also extremely young for my age, I got called childish or immature a lot!

I remember in 5th grade I was really excited to share my first painting, 2/
it had a teddy bear, and my teacher said it was childish or immature - I was 9-10 years old! I was a child! This turned me off of trying hard at art the rest of my life.

I’m a big picture thinker & concise in my written expression which can be mistaken for superficiality 3/
I was generally good at getting points across w/few words. When I was finally asked to add more detail in college, I realized that so much detail was superfluous to me, I didn’t know what details others would find relevant. So I’d add more detail and get accused of rambling. 4/
Fortunately as an adult, I have the freedom to choose to connect with people who get me, and I don’t need to spend much energy on those who clearly don’t.
