Dirk’s Dream Offseason For the Chiefs (A Thread)

As of today, the Chiefs will enter the offseason about $14.3 million over the projected $181 million salary cap. We’ll have to do some restructures, and extensions, but we can certainly manipulate that number.

Restructure Frank Clark - As we all know, he didn’t play anywhere near the level of his paycheck. I love the guy, and he’s very clutch, but he has to take a pay cut. Right now he has one of the worst contracts in football.

Restructure Chris Jones - After another monster year, he definitely doesn’t need a pay cut. But to free up some cash, we’re gonna need to turn some of his money into a guaranteed signing bonus. I highly doubt Chris says no to more guaranteed money.

Let Sammy Watkins walk, or re sign him for VERY cheap - Love him, but if he doesn’t take a major pay cut he’s gotta go. He’s never on the field. When he is, he makes us a better unit, but he just never is. Choice is his.

Extend Eric Fisher - Give him a 1 year extension, with a voidable year in 2023. Turn his $10 Million base salary in 2021 into a guaranteed signing bonus, which will free up $6 million - $10 million in cap space for this season.

Get Lucas Niang back - I know we haven’t seen him yet, due to his opt out, but this kid has real potential. He didn’t allow a sack in 3 YEARS of College ball. If anything, the year off gave him a chance to get healthy. Here’s what the DROY Chase Young had to say about him:

Draft T/G Alijah Vera-Tucker, T Alex Leatherwood, T Jalen Mayfield, T Tevin Jenkins, T Liam Eichenberg, LB Nick Bolton, or WR Kadarius Toney at pick 31. All would have immediate impacts and make us better at their respective positions.

(If Sammy leaves) snag a WR2 in Free Agency - This year’s FA class for WR’s is VERY deep, with guys like Allen Robinson, Corey Davis, Chris Godwin, JuJu, the list goes on. As an avid Mecole supporter, I hate to admit that he’s not ready to take the WR2 role.

Free up space for Jason Kelce - if we can clear space, the rumors are true and he gets cut, and we let Austin Reiter walk, let the Kelce brothers reunite. 33 year old Jason Kelce could come relatively cheap, especially to play with his brother.

Extend Tyrann Mathieu - This is an obvious one. One of, if not the best safety in the league. Extend him, turning some money into a signing bonus to free up more space for the season.

Sign Patrick Peterson - With 2 starting corners being free agents this year, Bashaud Breeland and Charvarius Ward, this could be a smart move. Reunite P2 with his best friend Tyrann, and add veteran depth at corner. Win for both sides.

The biggest Question Mark on our o line will be the availability of all pro RT Mitchell Schwartz. Judging by how he left off his last Instagram post, it doesn’t seem like he will retire, which is a positive sign (hopefully). Back injuries at that age and size are not ideal.

Depth: Kelechi Osemele, Martinas Rankin, Andrew Wylie*, Daniel Kilgore*

That pretty much sums up my dream offseason. It addresses our dire need to upgrade our o line, our gap at WR2 assuming Sammy walks, and a few gaps on the Defense, along with a great draft. Again, make sure to like and RT, a lot of time and effort was put into this #TakeItBack
