Hmm, my house's water filter is leaking.

From the top.

Better replace it before it blows up again like in years past.
Wait, this replacement one at B'Lowes has a bleed valve!

Does mine have a bleed valve that's leaking?!
It does! That is PRECISELY the problem!

Woohoo, o-ring kit time!
You're probably wondering how this is even a problem.

To answer your question, residential water pressure is supposed to be about 35PSI.

...not over 100 regulated down from literally who knows what.
The seal on the drain valve on my house's entire water supply flew right off.

Wellp.

...need to fix this if I wanna friggin' shower tonight.
Time to breakout the gasket punch set and literally a pack of generic gasket material.
Ooooh!

Basically perfect!

Works, btw. Very well!
WOAH I CAN GET TO THE O-RING WITHOUT REMOVING THE HOUSING AT ALL?!

BRB PHILLIPS HEAD
Consider the following:

Dog the cat
Fuck you, bleeder valve!
SO, the original o-ring is much smaller than the ones I have available.

And as you see, it has a flat seat it seals against.

SO, I'mma try and gasket-punch an o-ring down to size.
Theory time:

SO, the only reason this bleed-valve has a spring at all is for before the system is pressurized.

Once pressurized, it's the system's own pressure that holds the seal against the seat and creates the sealing force.
If it wasn't held in place by the spring, it'd relax and open up whenever you shut your water main off. ...and then you'd turn it back on and water would blast out of this orifice. And NOW it'd keep itself open from the flow!
Other kinds of systems have similar things in place, where they need a bleed or equalization valve, but in case of pressure drop or the other pressure rises and it bypasses, it needs to return to the base state.

For instance, just to not let air back in once you bled it out.
Wish me luck, not the best fit.
Y'Know, Idunno, that looks decent.
BUTT PUCKER TIME
Y'Know, this was exciting, but...
... it's still leaking.
Thanks dad!

Hopefully one of thess manages.
Looks a lot better.

Last try before I just buy a new one.
...you win for the night, water filter.

At least I know it's not gonna blow up like it did years ago.
I think I did fairly well for not being a plumber, hehe.

...oh well.
