The ongoing debate around #BillC7 is incredibly disturbing to follow. Medical Assistance in Death #MAiD is being extended beyond terminal illness, to include ppl diagnosed w/ mental illness (among others). Here's why this is so fucked up (a

Bill C-7 comes at a time when disabled ppl should be fast tracked for COVID-19 vaccination, but aren't. When disability benefits remain way lower than the CRB. When 80+ disability orgs like @djnontario @DAWNRAFHCanada @BCANDS1 @InclusionCA are in opposition. But it proceeds.
How can you possibly expect to determine if someone is 'irredeemably suffering' at a time like this? Suffering is tied to the social conditions of our lives. Disabled people don't have equal access to essential services, housing, income supports, justice or even palliative care.
If doctors can suggest MAiD to their patients (which was debated and passed), coercion becomes a huge ethical issue. Especially because it will further disadvantage poor QTBIPOC disabled folks.
This is all going ahead *without* actually consulting ppl diagnosed as MI.

Hell, even the UN critiqued #BillC7.
Instead of supporting disabled people to live, the Canadian state is offering us death.
