I'm a medical student who comes from a family with long history of substance and alcohol use disorder. I myself stopped drinking 6 years ago because I didn't like what I was seeing it do to me. I cannot tell you how many times #MedTwitter
I erase the word "illicit" from course material and replace it with "recreational" or just leave it out. Even better: say marijuana, heroine, cocaine, etc.

"Illicit" is about legality. We are not in school to become lawyers, we are in school to become doctors. #MedTwitter
It's literally not our domain. Speeding is illicit. We ask people if they where a seatbelt, not if they illegally operate their car. Why are we asking people about the legality of their disease? #MedTwitter
So no, none of the videos showing Letterman making fun of Lindsay Lohan's recovery journey are surprising. It wasn't surprising, nor was it funny, to see people following Amanda Bynes' disease process with boxes of popcorn like it was a Marvel movie. #medtwitter
What IS inspiring me are people like Hunter Biden saying to a journalist "say that nicer to me" when she finished his sentence for him and said "in and out of rehab seven or eight times" with a coldness. #MedTwitter
To know addiction is to know it is a disease and not a choice. People making fun of those who seek treatment for substance use, as many times as they need it, certainly would not make fun of someone with refractory lymphoma. #medtwitter
And any physician or physician in training who was making fun of someone because of an illness that wasn't responding to treatment would be drummed out justifiably. #MedTwitter
The way we discuss addiction in medical education and in the media is heartbreaking and it is killing people and prolonging suffering. I'm not going to be quietly erasing illicit anymore. I'll be loudly erasing it. All of this has GOT to end. #MedTwitter
*wear not "where." Sorry folks, I was just so heated.
