Imagine, if you will...
Every licensed driver in the whole world who is concerned about climate change, says, "OK, then I'm going to drive 5 mph / 8 kmph below the speed limit every day I drive from this day forward."
Just that.
What happens?
There are between 1.4 and 2 billion drivers worldwide. Say one-third of them reduced their speed by 5 or 8 whatevers.
So, 600 million drivers slow down by the magic number. What happens?
You can't go any faster than the car in front of you.
3. In two different ways, this causes a reduction in direct transportation fossil fuel emissions.
Emissions reduce because cars go less distance per unit of time. The farther you go the more energy it takes to get you there. Horsepower is literally the measure of work by time.
4. Also, all cars including race cars consume more fuel per unit of distance as the go faster beyond about 35 mph due to the density of air. This can't be engineered out. 70 mph wind blows down buildings. That's a lot of force and energy.
So, now we've reduced emissions two ways.
5. It would probably cause a recession.
A recession is a reduction in GDP.
GDP is the dollar value of all the crap bought and sold in the US per year.
A lot of that crap is gasoline.
A significant reduction in gasoline consumption & emission would be, all by itself, a recession.
7. I don't know how many gallons of gasoline-equivalent it takes to put a gallon in your tank, but it's a big number. Rattles around in the back of my head that I read it takes over 9 gallons at the pump to put a gallon in your tank. I'm not sure. Bunch, though.
8. So, if 600 million drivers worldwide slowed down 5, all the fuel they didn't burn would be multiplied by 9 at the wellhead.
And all that 9 turns into emissions too.
And GDP.
9. I would go so far as to say there is no way to end climate change or even remotely approach zero anythings by any-year without exploding the GDP and the economy.
GDP is another word for carbon emissions.
GDP is another word for extinction.
10. All these people going to protests. It's not working. Hey @Fridays4future - drive 5 or 8 below the speed limit every day forever. Get your parents to.
We can explode Capitalism. I'm serious.
11. This is tongue in cheek, but you do realize this would actually happen as I've described it, right?
All of our current economy is based on transporting almost everything long distances rapidly. All of this distance requires x number of vehicle going x fast.
Fragile.
12. The reason nobody will do anything about climate change is because everything about our lives as we know them causes it. Directly.
If / when the money flowing through the petroleum industry stops flowing, the economy implodes.
13. Somebody want to hazard a guess how many jobs worldwide are dependent on a prosperous petroleum industry? I don't know, but I'm betting it's a big number.
This stuff matters. I understand that everyone has just decided to ride it out, but - are we sure?
14. Every individual (not-for-pay) driver could do this if they wanted to. Cheap. Cheaper than not doing it. Not one step out of your way, nothing to buy, nothing to install, no password required. Blow up the entire petroleum industry. Blow up the economy.
15. Somewhere along the line you might want to look into getting a donkey.
Later, y'all.
