I saw a teenage Black girl doing DARE tabling outside a Five Guys and an older, bigger white man was loudly talking to her in a way I didn’t think was okay. So I used bystander intervention techniques and IT WORKED
I engaged with her, not him, and chatted with her about her table. He got PISSED and started yelling at me for “interrupting” their “conversation” (which to me looked like him loudly talking at her and her looking uncomfortable)
He also yelled at me about:
- how he was a minister
- how he has been married for 47 years
- how I have a big mouth
- how I also have a big butt
- how I’m so fat and that women are supposed to look attractive
- how he “knew what I was doing”
But he stopped yelling at her!

I mostly replied “okay” to everything he said. I really wanted to ask him about Jesus and what he might think of how he was behaving, but sadly I didn’t get to. He was super focused on how big a mouth and also butt I had
I was scared the whole time! I never thought he was going to, like, punch me, but he was taller than me and SO loud! But I thought: this girl’s mom isn’t here so I have to be her mom right now. I just stood between him and her and kept calmly saying “okay.” And finally he left!!
I asked if she was all right and she said yes, that her shift was almost over. “He was yelling, but he wasn’t mad at me,” she said, like that made it okay
I checked on her after I did my errands and she was all right.
