#WomenInScienceDay there is so much talent to celebrate but so much more needs to happen to improve access and career advancement. So today i have a few calls to action. 1/n
Achievements of women must be better recognised and rewarded. Those in positions of influence must use that influence equitably. From suggested speakers for conferences through to award nominations. Balance needs redressing. 2/n
Role of men as allies so important, given stastically they are more likely to be in senior roles. Can help in so many ways. Recognition conscious and unconscious bias important. Men vital to helping achieve change.
Organisations should know gender pay gap and work actively to address. Speaking to female employees so important..
Let women use their titles as they see fit. And use them in introducing female colleagues consistently as you would men. I know a few men just known as 'prof' in the workplace. Yet women wishing to use title considered aloof and hierachical in a negative way by some..
I dont want to see a young woman and know that statistically she wont achieve her dreams just because of her gender. And add in race and odds even slimmer. Promition of #WomenInScience benefits the individual and the community.
And if you detect some bitterness you are astute. I am for myself and others. As i see male colleagues 'cycle' past to professorships one by one, its like being in a race with a puncture. I am taking in the scenery more now rather than focussing on a finish line.
But on this #WomenInScienceDay celebrate the women you know, find out about those hidden in front of you. Dont accept it has to be this way. Be change. Be hope. Do something different.
