When I was a kid, I went to primary school on a council estate. Most families were working class. And every single parent of the working class kids was a proud Labour voter. The idea of voting Conservative was inconceivable to them.

EVERYONE working class voted for Labour. Only the middle or upper classes voted for the SDP or Conservative. The working class knew the Tories didn’t represent them, understand them, or care for them. They knew the Tories were “the elite”, living in a different world.

These days, I don’t think much has changed with regards to how the Tories treat the working class. And yet, many of the working class now support Johnson and his party - despite their record on everything.

So what happened, to trigger this shift? What made the working class, historical Labour voters, suddenly begin to support a party that doesn’t have the slightest interest in looking after them? A party that is at the opposite end of the political spectrum?

Why would they vote for a party of toffs, inheritance millionaires, hedge-fund managers and spivs?
One word - populism. We’ve seen how so many have been sold the impossible ideal. And now the Tories attract voters from both ends of the spectrum - the rich AND the poor.

What the solution? I have no idea. We know that persuading a person they’ve been duped is nigh impossible. Brexit is a prime example of that - the evidence of its failure is plain for all to see - but they have to choose to. And many won’t.

I’m not really sure where I’m going with this... just some rambling thoughts. But one thing is clear: Labour MUST get those historical voters back. Because whether we like them or not, we need their votes to rid us of this corrupt government. Populism MUST be beaten.
End.
End.
