If you’re sharing links about Daniel Wu and Daniel Dae Kim asking for public officials to step up more in response to the attacks on elders in Oakland Chinatown, pls remember they’re asking for more power to be given to OPD to make arrests that target the Black community
Celebrities could use their influence and power to reach out to community members who are already involved in safety committees here, including local city council members like Carol Fife and Cat Brooks, who are working with both Asian and Black communities in solidarity together
There are many Oakland orgs that are urging Libby Schaff and Oakland leadership to work WITH the community, rather than leveraging anti-Blackness and creating more racial divisions between Black and Asian groups in the rise of these violent assaults on Asian elders and residents.
Here are some of those orgs:
The Anti Police Terror Project ( @APTPaction)
Moms 4 Housing ( @moms4housing)
The Asian Pacific Environmental Network ( @APEN4EJ )
If you are looking to boost and amplify how you can help Asian and Black communities in Oakland right now, support them

And here is a solid article from KTVU, a local news network, that summarizes community efforts toward solidarity and why calls for heightened policing are not the way: https://www.ktvu.com/news/asian-and-black-communities-aim-to-work-together-after-high-profile-attacks?fbclid=IwAR0ifoFArvj1b4htUnsKNxLJS902AZGSeVH6zz4FO7pkhxlJFPJEoyxi09w
I’ve observed heightened xenophobic, anti-Asian racism in local and non local spaces for a long time. With the pandemic, I experienced a dramatic rise verbal and physical racism firsthand. I’m scared for our elders, and for my friends, and myself.
But you are NOT supporting Asians in Oakland or anywhere if you are also promoting anti-Blackness through calls for policing. Listen to the people who live here and have been doing community work for years over your own biases or celebrities who are not a part of this community.
White supremacy did a great job pitting Asian and Black communities against each other, but you don’t have to feed into it. The first step is to look up local orgs in places where stories like this break, and listen to what they are saying. https://www.ktvu.com/news/asian-and-black-communities-aim-to-work-together-after-high-profile-attacks?fbclid=IwAR0ifoFArvj1b4htUnsKNxLJS902AZGSeVH6zz4FO7pkhxlJFPJEoyxi09w
