In December there was a cut from the police budget but our defund demands are not about austerity, they are about shifting power and resourcing community program instead of police. Talking about “defund” without talking about our demand to INVEST is purposefully misleading.

But Libby Schaaf did was go beyond purposefully misleading to straight up lying. She blamed Council President Nikki Bas for cuts to police when they actually came from Schaaf’s own office - without community partnership or consultation

What @nikki4oakland says here is key - “Across the nation some electeds are seeding division among racial groups. I continue to be angered by what Mayor Schaaf did—taking a space for healing & safety & using it to politically attack me."

@nikki4oakland continues: “What I'm trying to do is build more Black and Asian solidarity and understanding because it's very possible to condemn anti-Asian hate and violence, and also condemn violence against Black people. Those two things don't have to be in opposition.”
