Blonde, an album by Frank Ocean.
(track by track breakdown):
read this first if you want to know about frank’s whole career as opposed to just blonde by itself; he’s one of my favourite artists ever and i think this is one of the best albums of all time. i will be breaking down blonde specifically in this thread. enjoy! https://twitter.com/jansqueezy/status/1347950014333644803
Nikes:
frank opens up this album with the lead single, and it’s just a mellow track that makes you feel like you’re floating in slow motion. this song is a straight criticism of people with materialistic nature, instead of having compassion and love for the people around them.
Ivy:
frank shows remorse and anger towards a previous relationship he had that hasn’t seemed to work out well. he reminisces on when it first started, when it meant the world to him. he realises that they’re not kids anymore and that he can’t be playing these childish games.
Pink + White:
this track is essentially a tribute to someone who was close to frank that passed away. he reflects on the lessons that he was taught by this person and tells them that he hopes they’re doing well. it features backing vocals from the legendary beyoncé. great track.
Be Yourself:
this is basically an interlude of a voice message from Rosie Watson, the mother of one of frank’s childhood friends. she advises thoroughly not to do drugs, specifically marijuana and alcohol. it’s interesting considering a lot of frank’s music is about this stuff.
Solo:
this track is the anthem for anyone who feels alone, but could also be interpreted as a song for those who feel “so low”. he’s yearning to be in a relationship with someone so he can get out the pit of darkness he enters when he’s all by himself. a depressing song for sure.
Skyline To:
this is the bridge between the two tracks next to this one. because at this point is where the whole album takes a turn. there’s references to sex and the summer and it paves the way for the next track.
Self Control:
frank is telling a story about a relationship that is slowly falling apart because the other person was being way too immature. at the end he shows remorse as he says he knows this person has many options but he wants to be with them because he’s lost self control.
Good Guy:
frank revisits the idea of loneliness from encounters he’s had with people where it just doesn’t click. but he feels guilty because he’s sure they’re good people. making it seem like it’s his fault and thus intensifying the emotion of loneliness in his life.
Nights:
this is one of the best tracks on the album in my opinion. there’s two sides to this song, with the second one being a lot more calm than the first half. it tells the story about the good and the bad things that frank has experienced from dating. an interesting track.
Solo (Reprise):
this is one of andre 3000’s best verses and it’s not hard to see why. he seems optimistic but when you look into the lyrics it’s actually quite sad. once again the theme of loneliness is referenced. his flow on this is majestic and it’s just a great track overall.
Pretty Sweet:
frank is a lot more energetic and the instrumental compliments that quite well. it then soothens, to perhaps symbolise frank gaining control of his emotions as an attempt to reach out of the darkness into the light because he’s so tired of being alone.
Facebook Story:
this is a skit of french producer, SebastiAn telling a story that shows how a relationship can be ruined by something that may not mean a lot to you but everything to someone else, in this case, accepting someone on facebook. he just preferred physical intimacy.
Close To You:
this is a cover of Stevie Wonder’s cover of “Close To You” by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. this is supposed to be a follow up of the previous skit because it shows how much he values physical intimacy over the other stuff that comes with a relationship in life.
White Ferrari:
this is a very emotional track. i applaud frank for making this, it is truly a work of art. it touches on the topic of love on such a deep level that it just hits even if you’ve never experienced such feelings. it’s quite a depressing track but so beautiful.
Seigfried:
this track goes outside of frank’s love life and into his inner mind. he’s speaking about all his shortcomings and the echo makes it sound like he’s almost speaking to God. he’s heartbroken that this person doesn’t want him. as he says, “i’d do anything for you”.
Godspeed:
this is frank letting go to stop the hurt that comes with loving this person as he has throughout this entire album. he respectfully decides that he’s going to move on and has no negative intent towards this person as he still cares about them very much.
Futura Free:
frank spills everything going through this mind as he touches on the subjects of sexuality, feeling like a god when famous but assuring that he’s human like us. the second half consists of his brother recording a static-filled interview.
it’s a great way to end it.
