Re: Dualshockers, it bears repeating that algorithms, Google, YouTube etc is all unpredictable.

Trying to compete with behemoths like IGN for news coverage or Google rankings as a mid-tier site is unsustainable and destructive.
For mid-tier sites to succeed, I truly believe you must go the subscription route with original content (this can still be journalism) and a focused community.

For a media site to actually succeed, grow and invest in interesting content in 2021, that should be your focus.
The amount of pressure that has been taken off our shoulders since opening our subscription programs can't be understated.

When you have a steady stream of revenue, you can take a bit more risk on content. You also get invaluable feedback from people that literally pay you.
You're going to see more sites like USG, Dualshockers, etc learn the hard way or make the shift before the year is out.

I mean, look at the Axe of the Blood God Patreon. USG was presumably leaving a bunch of money on the table by not offering a subscription program to support it
If people enjoy your content, don't be afraid to ask them to support it through more than just views and "ad revenue".

Find a way to make them an active participant in your growth and success, not just a customer of your content.
