I think what really bugs we about the Trump trial and those defending it as somehow morally necessary is how grossly unjust the trial is. And in that it dawns on me that many people no longer know what justice is.
There are many elements contained within the word “justice”. We expect it to mean that the guilty are punished but many forget that it also means the innocent are spared and that everyone be given equal treatment. I believe Trump is innocent but that is least important here.
What we see in the impeachment trial is people who are horrendously guilty passing judgement. It isn’t a matter that they are imperfect sinners doing their best: this is hideously immoral people taking on the mantle of morality to condemn a man they merely hate.
You can try to say that the moral status of the judge doesn’t matter but it really does. There are people in Congress and the MSM and the punditry calling for conviction who are guilty of far more and worse crimes than anything charged to Trump even if you assert he’s guilty.
And you can further assert that the crimes of others don’t excuse Trump *but they do*. They do because we all know full well that the criminals judging Trump will never feel the bite of Justice’s sword. They are immune. But not Trump. And there’s the injustice.
When a legal system allows one class of persons to routinely skate even on the most monstrous of crimes then it is an unjust system and you won’t make it just by saying that in this instance it is condemning the guilty. It is incapable of judging at all.
Justice requires rough equity. We’ll never achieve full equality under the law because we’re Fallen: but we can’t even approximate justice when certain persons are excused from the law because of who they’re friends with.
As of this day in the United States, no action of law by the federal government meets the requirements of justice. Until people like the Clintons and Omar and corporate donors and grifting union bosses see a jail cell, it can’t possibly provide justice.
And, so, those calling for Trump to be condemned are in the wrong. Morally in the wrong: such are calling for the perpetuation of an unjust, two tiered legal system where you fate before the law is determined by your social position rather than the facts.
I won’t participate in that. The system will continue to grind out its decisions but without my consent. I can’t stop it from happening but I won’t help it by saying what is unjust can still do a good thing.
