HOW KANYE WEST CHANGED HIP HOP FOREVER WITH THE COLLEGE DROPOUT.
Yesterday was the 17th anniversary of “The College Dropout.” It’s one of the greatest debut albums of all time and it’s impact and influence isn’t spoken about enough, because it literally changed hip hop forever.
On this album, Kanye became one of the pioneers of the “chipmunk sound,” a sound that has become widely popular, even to this day.
At the time, gangster rap was dominating hip hop music. Kanye rapped about subjects that were more accessible to the public and through that, he opened a lane for most of the rappers we have now; while also making hip hop more popular.
The “pink polo and backpack” fits completely went against what the stereotypical rapper wore at the time and so Kanye made it possible for artists like Uzi, Young Thug and many more to express themselves differently.
“Jesus Walks” became a massive hit and was something that most labels had turned down when Kanye showed it to them. It was so different from everything at the time and it created a lane for religious raps in hip hop music.
Kanye was changing the music on the radio with tracks like “Never Let Me Down,” and “All Falls Down,” he was creating conscious rap hits which is something that later allowed for rappers like Common and Lupe Fiasco to do the same.
This album went three times platinum and earned ten Grammy nominations. This was something rare, something that would go on to impact hip hop forever. It set a new standard for rappers to try meet for many years. This album is a part of history and deserves a spot in a museum.
