Given that vaccination levels remain relatively low and new variants are spreading, daily deaths could surge again in the spring if contact increases, even among vaccinated individuals. People who are vaccinated can still spread COVID-19.
To prevent future outbreaks, the best policy tools include scaling up vaccines rapidly and equitably, expanding mask use, and social distancing mandates.
