It’s bizarre, to be clear, because even if it turned out that Sicknick just coincidentally dropped dead for reasons totally unrelated to the injuries he sustained—which seems awfully unlikely, but who knows—it wouldn’t make any real difference to the impeachment argument.
There’s no real question that dozens of officers were assaulted and injured—some extremely seriously—by the mob Trump incited. There’s no coherent argument that his conduct was impeachable because Sicknick died, but wouldn’t be if he had lived.
If it ultimately turns out NYT got some aspects of the story wrong, that’s maybe an interesting media story. It might matter in a wrongful death suit. But the idea that it’s somehow relevant to whether the Senate should convict Trump is just absurd.
