Usually I shop at Aldi or Tesco, they're both on the same retail park. Sometimes go to Iceland for the odd top up bits. But now a new supermarket has opened really close to my house, so I suppose we'll do most of our shopping there now. And that is trade gravity explained.
Now, the new supermarket doesn't sell Honey & Nut Shredded Wheat, my favourite cereal. I'd be tempted to go to Tesco to buy them. But if the nearest shop which sold them was 100 miles away, I probably wouldn't bother. I'd have Ready Brek instead. Which is trade gravity explained.
Would have considered Weetabix, but the beans fiasco makes me hurl when I see them. To the 27 countries nearest to us, Britain is now Weetabix with Beans.
Which is why it is nonsense that we are prioritising closer trade ties with the other side of the world over the massive trade bloc near us. The biggest trade opportunities exist with the countries nearest to us.
Sure, I might have a loyalty card with the shop 100 miles away, but that doesn't mean I'm going to travel 100 miles for a box of cereal.
