A thread on equality. And I do believe it is essentially about that.

It is clear that a large % of our Healthcare workers are women.
This is a fact.
We also have many great men working alongside us and they are our colleagues, our allies, our team.
So this thread is not about criticising men, it’s about enabling women.

I have worked FT for 26 years and have 3 children.Every decision revolves around a hierarchy of family and work in 1st place.
Most women&some men,with home caring responsibilities,construct a support pyramid
Childcare is left to the individual in Ireland with little support from the State. The higher the income the easier it is to afford this, and quality improves with increasing income.

After early childcare, the system is more complex as education is state-funded and necessary.
So after school care, holiday care, illness cover etc has to be carefully planned and traditionally we have leaned on family members for a dig-out in times of crisis.

As HCW’s, responsibility to patients under our care is of paramount importance.
It is not an option to be less than fully available at work, ever, and the current crisis demands it of many key workers.

But the usual security is gone, that the structures we set in place for our children’s well-being and education, have been pulled from under our feet
They are missing out on critical time in education, interactions with their friends, outdoor activity. They are worried for their parents, missing them, longing for a return to normality as are all children.

But the dual pull of work and home responsibility is intolerable for many
When times are tough already for those delivering frontline care to Covid sufferers, they have to deal with the loss of peace of mind with worry about the health, education and well being of their families.

This has been ignored for the most part by those who make the decisions.
We need to get women’s views to the discussion table at the highest level. There are massive structural deficits to overcome, as we have not yet succeeded in creating systems that encourage ongoing equal representation up to the highest level, in committees, boards, government.
Men are not the enemy, but they often need a reminder, by the women in attendance, that the plight of groups of workers is absolutely real and must be attended to.

We must get all our children back to education and we must aim to reduce Covid levels to the lowest level possible.
There is so much work to be done that is critical.
It won’t be easy+will involve a lot of hardship. We may not manage #ZeroCovid but we need to do our best under our own unique circumstances.

Otherwise we can breathe easy for a minute only, then fasten seatbelts for #FourthWave
