Rinku Sharma's murder's lack of coverage (barring few articles) is one of the reasons fuelling perception-reality gap in how India's H-M conflict is viewed by Indian society vs what is covered in English Media (India & abroad).
We need major course correction in crime reporting
Family continues to allege communal angle while police says it's not. Almost in all such cases, when victim is H, MSM carries POV of police when they downplay that angle. If victim is M, MSM carries whichever POV strengthens communal angle. There's an obvious double standard here
Ultimately truth takes a backseat, Majority-Minority complex is used as a blanket platitude to either downplay in former or amplify in the latter thereby widening the rift & nurturing the fault-line invariably.
Ironically this is done to ensure lack of division but on ground, effect is opposite. This further fuels the narrative and so the tussle becomes more and more amplified.
It's a counter intuitive approach and sooner the honesty approach adopted by media the better IMHO
Further rift is seen in how local dailies cover crimes vs how MSM covers it. Local dailies cover it usually on AS-IS basis while English MSM covers it with the bias mentioned above. Hence elite POV moves in one direction while major public POV opposite. It creates a vicious cycle
Another major reason for the widening rift is the disproportionate rate of information dissemination. Local dialies have much wider coverage than the English MSM and the overlap amongst their readers by my intuition not extensive. This further creates two powerful narratives
Now the problem is English readers refuse to even look at local dailies which present crimes in a much more factual sense and w/o much political bias. English MSM does active headline management comprising the very idea of ethical reporting. A quick comparison would reveal that.
In crime reporting one needs to have unbiased objective factually accurate reports even if it challenges your POV. No point in injecting POVs no matter what the reason. Another issue is State's negligence on documenting extensive data (not done due to political reasons maybe).
The Indian State needs to shed it's political gimmicking over this and document extensive category wise data like in most nations. Yes it will generate a lot of heated debate but in the long run it will set the record straight.
The English MSM also needs to come out of its bias
They need to realize. Can't have the cake and eat it too. You can't bash Hs again and again for oppressing minorities while the ground reality is changing in the opposite direction with daily such cases being reported. You are driving your own credibility in the ground
All the while inflaming the situation. Any society or its media that can't be objective in face of hurtful truths will only end up creating & nurturing divides amongst its people, leaving no room for growth or future reconciliation
The sooner they realise this the better.
