I'm a Danish citizen. I moved to Denmark when I was 24, and have lived here for over 14 years. I have lived here my whole working life. I pay my taxes and raise my kids
Denmark has been a difficult country to immigrate to, but I still adore it. And I warmly endorse Danish values

But this creeping nationalism hurts. It hurts as an immigrant (which I accept I will always be). But it also hurts as a citizen. it contrary to what I believe makes Denmark great. Solidarity. Empathy. The conviction that by looking after the weakest person everyone benefits.
Look I get it. I'm not naive. I know tough times are coming economically. And tough times are here psychologically. It's easier to turn inward, and look after your own when things get rough. But it saddens me deeply that Danish politicians are turning down this road.
To the extent that I - a citizen, a resident of 14 years, who cares about this country - can have an opinion about Danish values, then I say this.
The public discourse right now on immigration, and the general disrespect for others it embodies, is profoundly Un-Danish
Do better

(Correction, immigrated at 22 so 16 years. Has it been that long)
