I’ve always felt it was important to use my platform to represent & share my culture with pride. In a time of so much xenophobia & anti-Asian sentiment...I think it’s more important than ever! So much hate stems from fear of the unknown.

In honor of #LunarNewYear

First, while many know the holiday as #ChineseNewYear
, as a Chinese American, I think it’s important to recognize that this is a tradition celebrated by MANY Asian communities. A reminder that Asians are not a monolith, so please be inclusive & call it #LUNARNewYear

Here’s a #TBT from high school when I was in the San Francisco parade as a cover girl for Sing Tao Daily - a Chinese newspaper, not the beer
.
The Parade & Festival isn’t happening this year for the first time since its beginning 150 years ago.

In Mandarin, a Chinese dialect, we say 新年快乐, pronounced XIN NIAN KUAI LE (translated to Happy New Year). We also often say 恭喜发财, pronounced GONG XI FA CAI (translated to Wish You Prosperity... aka Hope You Get Rich!
).

As kids, we would also say 红包拿来,pronounced HONG BAO NA LAI (translated to Hand Over the Red Envelope)
... they’re filled with cash! Sadly, the $$$ you get is less when you’re an adult and it’s not as cute when you use that phrase
.

My first years of life were mostly spent in China with my grandparents. I’m definitely a grandpa’s girl
