Trans kids grow up in Utah hearing the adults in their lives tell them they don't deserve access to health care, that they can't play sports with their peers, and that even mentioning that they exist in a classroom is controversial. Just pause for one minute and think about that.
I am begging you to extend the tiniest measure of empathy to literal children before you put them through what I went through: a horrifying barrage of addiction and self harm and suicide attempts. When you tell a kid their identity is wrong, you convince them they have no future.
I know you think this is some abstract concept that you can debate about for fun without bothering to do any research and react entirely based on your internalized transphobia and the discomfort that creates but in the meantime this is crushing people. Using them up. It's wrong.
Your actions have consequences. Your words have consequences. Your silence has consequences. The world looks at trans kids every single day and chooses violence, and I promise you that you can choose something else. These kids desperately need you to choose something else.
If these lawmakers took the time to meet the kids I've met, to hear the stories they tell, to understand even a fraction of the pain they rise above every single day then the word "fair" would turn to ash in their mouth. This is punching down in the truest sense. It's just wrong.
