The response to Councilmember Raman's vote on the Onni / LA Times development has been painful to watch, and really reveals why councilmembers shouldn't be making these decisions. (short thread)
On on side, it's awful governance to have a set of rules that, when followed, you still might be punished for. It'd be like driving the speed limit in a 30 mph zone and having your license taken away bc they changed it to 20 while you were still on the road. It's obviously wrong.
On the other side, so long as the rules are fungible, it feels wrong to not try to squeeze everything you possibly can out of every project. This still may fail you politically because some people will always think you could have gotten more.
A lot of people were gonna be mad at CM Raman no matter how she voted, so I'm glad she made this about more than an individual project. If it'd solely been a debate over how much to squeeze out of this one dvlpmt, we'd be having the exact same fight over the next 50 projects too.
That's no way to run a city. She was right that we need to reform the system so the outcomes of these developments aren't so random—so driven by who gets involved, or not, for each project. Even if you disagree with her vote, I hope people will support that effort going forward.
