Thread on urbanisation in FGS and FMS capitals, 2013/2021. Starting with the capital of #Somalia. #Mogadishu is more densely populated, and its suburbs have expanded. However, as we shall see, urbanisation in non-AS cities is not as impressive as in AS areas. https://twitter.com/somalianalyst/status/1359812393556148227
Here is Kismayo, de facto capital of Jubaland state. Its development is barely noticeable.
Baidoa, the de facto capital of Southwest state. Ignore the building up to the south of the airport; it is military and other contractors. Population increase is most noticeable to the northwest. Some are IDPs.
Jowhar, the capital of HirShabelle state. Some expansion to the west, nothing major.
Cadaado, until recently the interim capital of Galmudug state. It more than doubled in size as it hosted the state. No wonder they did not want the capital relocating to Dhuusamareeb.
Garowe, capital of Puntland. It has doubled in size from 2013-2021.
Hargeisa has seen quite some growth since 2013. The new areas seem better planned.
Bonus: Boosaaso. A huge IDP camp to the east is the only major change.
