Thoughts from a tired teacher as my school district went 100% virtual today over choosing a snow day and giving the students a day off. We're so focused on the student's being "behind". I have some thoughts.

1. If I hear one more person say "but the Ss are so behind" I'm gonna scream. Stop
speaking about student's from a deficit mindset. It's gross. Just. Stop.
2. Behind what exactly? THE ENTIRE WORLD IS IN A FUCKING PANDEMIC. No one is *behind*. We are all doing the things. 2/

3. Again, I ask BEHIND WHAT? We wrote the standards we are afraid they are behind in. WE WROTE THE RULES. They didnt just fall out of the sky and become written in stone. We
wrote
the
rules, we can rewrite the rules. We can do what we do best and meet these kids

WHERE THEY ARE NOT WHERE WE *THINK* THEY SHOULD BE. And guess what? Thats okay.
4. & again, behind what? Ever since specific legislation has been passed (looking at you NCLB and Race to the Top) we have been passing kids up grade levels to avoid federal and state repercussions 4/

for *years* bc the state and federal DOE is (& has been for awhile) a joke.
5. For years we have been attempting to fix & bandaid the symptoms of what truly is an outdated (racist), non/performing, & detrimental system instead of actually fixing the system as a whole. 5/

And if that makes you uncomfortable? Good. Sit with that.
The kids are not behind. The kids have adapted over and over again this past year. Without hesitating, without blinking, & without a whole lot of push back. The kids will be alright. 6/

The teachers will continue to show up & meet them exactly where they are, like we're supposed to do, like we've been taught & trained to do.
