(Sincerely) trying to make a mental list of the global range of ppl who would have been left out of Twitter because they didn't have 1 USD or didn't have a credit or debit cart to sign up with. https://twitter.com/ftrain/status/1359893657730641925
There's a nice range of responses in the replies. Everything from 'it would curtail abuse' to 'it wouldn't have scaled'. Fav is this observation about how ad supported growth reshapes business priorities + culture https://twitter.com/anildash/status/1359898002429800454
Communities use diff filters to curate users. Friend invites serve this function for Clubhouse. Fandoms use cultural fluency. Even things like NSFW ads on 4chan (unintentionally?) served as a way to keep certain users from entering. Fees seem to work well for Metafilter, imo.
One of the more interesting things I'm obsessing over for @ea1co is the eth based social token/NFT space looking for ways for creators to rep value in their work and communities https://niftycryptonomad.com/social-money-tokens-a-new-type-of-capital-for-creators-communities/
imo Social tokens UX is still way too complex for non-superfans but one day it might be one of many ways to address @cmcilwain's Issue about social platforms' struggle to value the outsized contributions of Black creators https://twitter.com/ea1co/status/1359232821496344576
There are a bunch of folks to follow but I'm paying a lot of attention to @whatdotcd who is exploring social tokens as a way to accrue value for folks who deliver value for IG, TT https://twitter.com/defiantnews/status/1323349221932703751
Also think @Bradley_Miles_ 'User Generated Capital' is an important thread to follow https://twitter.com/Bradley_Miles_/status/1355180516677459968
