More and more I’m seeing people repost artwork here on the TL without the original artist’s permission. Since this is a common problem on AniTwitter, I’ve decided to take the liberty of creating this short thread here, hopefully educating you on how to properly repost artwork.

Before I start, reposting artwork without the artist’s permission is a very common problem (Especially with aesthetic accounts). Most people will credit the artist but won’t ask for permission. To break it down, it’s like stealing, these repost accounts get more attention (1/2)

and clout towards their repost than the artist did with the original post, taking away attention from the original post, which is unfortunate because the artist worked hard to create the art, only for it to be taken away by some bot who got more likes reposting their work. (2/2)

Now that you know about the problem itself, the first step to reposting artwork would be to ask for the artist’s permission. Usually, you can comment under their post asking if you can repost, or better yet, directly message them instead so it’s more convenient for them.

If they do say yes and give you permission to repost, you can go ahead and repost their work! Also, be sure to remember to credit them since they’re the ones who created the work in the first place, and so that people are aware of who made the art.

However, if they say no, DO NOT by any means repost their work. Also, in some cases, an artist will have something like “Do not repost my art” in their bio or display name. In that case don’t bother asking at all, and respect their wishes to not get their artwork resposted.

Also, if they do say no, one thing you can do is show your support by liking and RTing their artwork, so that more people can see it and more attention will be brought to the artist’s work, as it deservedly should as they put time and effort into their artwork.
