A modest proposal 🧐The day after #IDWGS2021 shld be the deadline for all institutions, orgs & individuals who celebrated IDWGS2020 in tweet, post or panel to publicly share info on their actions (w/ metrics) wrt 2 removing barriers to STEM for all genders thus⬆️ participation
I fully support #celebration & recognize the critical importance of #RoleModels & that #RepresentationMatters A single comment from a supportive teacher helped me to stay on track 4 a career in #science when I had been told I wasn't welcome. Cheer #WomeninSTEM #IDWGS2021 🎉🙌🏾
But #IDWGS2021 exists bc of an over-representation of (usually white) men in #STEM #science #leadership #engineering #research We must ask hard uncomfortable questions 😱😨 🧐🔬 We need answers, actions & change. We must also ask why so few WOC, Indigenous women, disabled women..
So, to truly celebrate #IWD2021 plse hold orgs & indivs accountable, call out performative messaging, demand evidence 4 claims of inclusive environments, require core EDI competencies in all (esp. men), create cultures of inclusion. Ask why there is over-representation & fix it.
Of course I now realize the hashtag should be #IDWGS2021 but the message is the same for #IWD2021 🤪
