just want to suggest that it's possible to hold several different opinions at once, ones that are not even in conflict with each other
I am horrified by the violence against elders, and I am also against the carceral state

as so many others have said, there are folks in the actual communities where these things are happening that want to do what's right by the community with solutions from the community.
does national media underplay hate crimes against Asian folks? yes. I'm glad they're paying more attention.
I also don't want to see people pushed into a justice system that is inherently corrupt, based on the same colonial mindset that caused most of our diasporas to begin with

there are other levels of violence against Asian communities happening but they're at the systemic level. Oakland Chinatown has been pummeled by economic injustice in the Bay Area for years now
there's been rampant elder abuse in the form of scams and grifts for a long time, too. that should also be getting attention!
anyway, I get feeling angry and frustrated and disgusted, because I feel all of those things, too
look up the orgs on the ground in your area, give them money if you can, volunteer if you can, or simply just point folks who can give either of those things in the right direction

I am not, by nature, a very optimistic or hopeful person. but I also can read this thread by @samklew and know from my own folks that are deep into organizing that real, material things are happening. those aren't being covered, either. https://twitter.com/samklew/status/1359608341568212997?s=20
there are people doing the work, and have been doing the work, and the more resources and eyes and hands they get, the better their work will be https://twitter.com/samklew/status/1359613339555426304?s=20
if your family is from the diaspora, it's very likely violence brought you here to begin with. it's likely your family has lived through violence here, too. I'm a kid of Southern California with people directly affected by the LA riots and the gang wars of the 90s
this country has always been violent towards Asian immigrants. it's good to know that, and it's good to be involved. it is not good to seek revenge against other marginalized communities. our liberations are bound together.
